Maisonneuve Market in Montréal: the neighbourhood market of Hochelaga-Maisonneuve
Reopened in 1980 thanks to a push from local residents, Maisonneuve Market brings together eight permanent shops open year-round on Rue Ontario Est. In summer, its square comes alive on Saturdays; in December, it keeps its usual hours, except December 25 and 26 and January 1 and 2.

On Rue Ontario Est, at the corner of Rue William-David, Maisonneuve Market is the neighbourhood market of Hochelaga-Maisonneuve. Much smaller than the Jean-Talon and Atwater markets, as Tourisme Montréal points out, it relies on a handful of specialty shops open year-round and on typically Quebec products.
Its history is that of a neighbourhood that held on to its market. Closed by the city in the 1960s, it resumed operations in 1980 thanks to the perseverance of local residents, before moving, some fifteen years later, into a new building a few steps from the old one. If you want to understand why these places matter so much, our article on the benefits of local markets gives several reasons.
What you'll find at Maisonneuve Market
Eight shops occupy the market year-round: a grocery and bulk store (Aliments Merci), a florist (Comptoir Lavigne), a cheese shop (Fromagerie Maisonneuve), a butcher (La Boucherie du Marché Maisonneuve), a fruit and vegetable shop (Les Jardins Dauphinais), a fishmonger (Poissonnerie La Mer), a bakery (Première Moisson) and a tobacco and convenience shop. So you can do a good part of your grocery shopping in a single stop.
The listing of the Association des marchés publics du Québec (AMPQ) also names, among the products regularly available, cured meats, jams and pickles, honey and maple syrup, herbs and spices, prepared meals, teas and coffees, poultry and alcoholic beverages. In summer, new market gardeners join in, with flowers and fresh herbs, and Saturdays from May to October become a food-and-music get-together, with a lively outdoor area. From May to October, the Kiosques de la Relève, rented by the day, also welcome young farmers and food processors.
The holidays at Maisonneuve Market: what we know for 2026
As of October 15, 2026, no 2026 holiday activities had been announced by the Société des Marchés publics de Montréal: the only item on the calendar was a cooking workshop for toddlers on October 17. The market stays open in December on its usual schedule, except December 25 and 26 and January 1 and 2, the closing days listed in the Société's FAQ.
In 2025, the market held a neighbourhood holiday celebration on November 29 and 30, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Place Gennevilliers-Laliberté, with the Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough. About ten exhibitors offered gourmet products and tableware, along with a visit from Santa, games, choirs and a winter terrace. The Salon des artisans d'Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, organized by CCSE Maisonneuve, also brought together more than 20 exhibitors. Keep an eye on the market's website as November approaches to find out whether the formula returns.
Good to know: history and access
The first market opened in the early 20th century in a stone building: the Société des Marchés publics de Montréal gives the year 1914, while Time Out mentions a Beaux-Arts building that opened in 1912. The current market moved next to that old building in 1995, according to Tourisme Montréal. The Dauphinais family, owners of the fruit and vegetable shop of the same name, were already there when the market operated under tents on the public square, and they helped revive it. On the square, take a moment to see the fountain topped by a bronze statue by Alfred Laliberté, which depicts a market gardener with his basket.
To get there, the Pie-IX and Viau metro stations serve the market, as do bus routes 125 and 139. The outdoor parking lot behind the market is free for 90 minutes, and there are racks to lock up your bike. As in all of Montréal's public markets, animals are not allowed, except guide dogs.
