Marché public de Shawinigan: a market founded in 1902, open year-round on Avenue Champlain

Founded in 1902, a year after the village was created, the Marché public de Shawinigan has been on Avenue Champlain, in the Saint-Marc neighbourhood, since 1966. Open year-round from Wednesday to Sunday, it brings together a cheese shop, a fishmonger, a butcher, a coffee roaster and ready-to-eat counters, with an area to eat on site.

The Marché public de Shawinigan was founded in 1902, following an election promise, a year after the village of Shawinigan was created. Located in the heart of the village, it played a part in the town’s development during a period of rapid industrialization, and it describes itself as one of the oldest public markets in Quebec. In 1966, it was relocated to Avenue Champlain, in the Saint-Marc neighbourhood, where it still stands.

Today it is a modest-sized indoor market, open year-round from Wednesday to Sunday. The Association des marchés publics du Québec (AMPQ) counts 8 to 15 stalls there. If you’re passing through Shawinigan, it’s a good place to pick up a few groceries from vendors who, for the most part, make their products on site, and to grab a bite.

Cheese, fish, coffee and ready-to-eat food

The merchant directory posted on the market’s website in October 2026 lists Brûlerie St-Maurice, Ferme Loranger (seasonal fruit and vegetables), L’unique Yvan du fromage, which also runs an olive bar, M.A Poissonnerie et compagnie, Multi-Ferme (butcher and ready-to-eat food) and two prepared-meal counters, MAMIA and Resteuro. The market is small: plan a targeted visit rather than a long stroll past the stalls.

On-site processing is a feature the market has highlighted since its 2015 renovations. An eating area also lets workers, students, families and visitors enjoy on site what they buy at the counters. You can even settle in to read or play board games, and the space can be rented after closing for receptions. Holiday season 2026: a holiday market to be confirmed

As of October 15, 2026, neither the market’s website nor the AMPQ listing announced a holiday market for 2026. In 2025, the AMPQ listed one from November 20 to December 9, over three weekends, Thursday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pop-up stalls with a variety of products for holiday shopping were added to the regular merchants.

Since the market is open year-round, you can do your December shopping there during regular hours. Do check the holiday hours, though, and keep an eye on the market’s website and Facebook page to find out whether the holiday market returns in 2026.

Good to know: a co-op that owns its building

Since 2011, the market has been run by a solidarity co-operative, which took over from the market vendors’ association. In 2014, the co-op acquired the building, with the City of Shawinigan granting it an emphyteutic lease option covering the building and its fixtures. The following year, an investment of nearly $1 million launched the renovation of the premises. In March 2025, the market also announced that Radio Shawinigan was moving in.

In terms of accessibility, the AMPQ listing states that Kéroul recognizes the market as partially accessible to people with reduced mobility.
