On Boulevard Wilfrid-Hamel, Le Grand Marché de Québec is a permanent public market, open year-round, seven days a week. It is run by the Coopérative des Horticulteurs de Québec, which has managed public markets in Québec City for more than 80 years. Its mission: to bring together, support and promote more than a hundred farmers, food processors and artisans from the greater Québec City region.

The market describes itself as "the shortest route from farm to plate". In practice, you buy directly from the people who produce the food. Since it stays open in January and February, it's a handy address for eating local in the depths of winter. To understand why that matters, read our article on the benefits of local markets.

In the aisles: from farm vegetables to orchard cider

The listing from the Association des marchés publics du Québec (AMPQ) describes a wide range: fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, cheese, charcuterie, breads and pastries, honey and maple syrup, jams and pickles, teas and coffees, alcoholic beverages, flowers and plants, non-timber forest products, prepared dishes and products from elsewhere. The same listing gives 30 to 100 stalls.

The directory on the official website gives an idea of the faces behind the counters. It includes Ferme Gagnon (a diversified market garden), Ferme François Blouin (fruits and vegetables), Érablière Godbout (a family maple operation), Cidrerie Verger Bilodeau, Canard Goulu (duck products), Cochons tout ronds (artisanal charcuterie), La Boîte à Pain (artisanal bakery), Brûlerie Rousseau (coffee) and Bleu Nature, which processes haskap berries and blueberries. The market also sets aside a space, La Parcelle, for up-and-coming agri-food businesses. Food counters let you eat on site.

The 2026 holiday season: the Grand Marché de Noël

From November 21 to December 24, 2026, the Grand Marché de Noël sets up inside the market: the dates are published on the official website. Destination Québec cité announces more than 250 agri-food businesses, artisans and artists, free admission and entertainment, with items for the table and for decorating, entirely local gifts and everything you need to prepare a holiday meal. The announced hours are the market's: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. If you're planning your menu, our traditional Quebec holiday recipes will give you a ready-made grocery list.

The program posted on the website adds two December events: a Marché des vins & spiritueux (wine and spirits market) on December 5 and 6, and the first edition of the Marché Caravane, devoted to local creators, artisans and small businesses, on December 12 and 13. For statutory holidays, the AMPQ listing indicated closures on December 25 and on January 1 and 2 for the 2025-2026 holidays. The 2026 holiday hours had not yet been specified in mid-October: check before you go.
