At the corner of Rue Notre-Dame and Avenue Atwater, in Montréal's Sud-Ouest, Atwater Market has occupied an Art Deco building recognizable by its tall clock tower since 1933. It takes its name from the avenue that borders it, itself named in honour of Edwin Atwater, a 19th-century businessman and city councillor.
The market follows the rhythm of the seasons. With the first frosts, walls go up around the market so you can shop sheltered all winter, then they come down when the weather softens, and the market is open-air again. In spring, horticultural growers set up. In summer, the Lachine Canal bike path runs right beside it, which makes it a popular stop for cyclists, notes Tourisme Montréal.
What you'll find at Atwater Market
The market's directory lists about sixty vendors. Inside, meat holds a special place: the Société des Marchés publics de Montréal counts eight butcher shops there, some of which have been there since the market opened and are now in their third generation. You'll also find cheese shops, a fishmonger, a bakery, grocery and bulk stores, specialty shops, florists and a honey and maple producer.
Outside, the offer changes with the seasons: market gardeners and seasonal fruits and vegetables, horticultural growers in spring, then Christmas tree sellers at the end of the year. In summer, the Pôle des saveurs offers quick meals, with picnic tables and a large terrace facing the canal. From May to October, the Kiosques de la Relève, rented by the day, also welcome young farmers and food processors. The holidays at Atwater Market: what we know for 2026
What's confirmed: the Village de Noël de Montréal, organized by La Lutinerie, will return to Place du Marché Atwater from November 26 to December 24, 2026, with 59 Quebec artisans and more than 90 free activities. It is open mainly Friday to Sunday until December 20, then every day from December 21 to 24; the detailed schedule is posted on the event's website.
As for the market itself, its 2026 holiday program had not been published as of October 15, 2026. In 2025, according to the listing of the Association des marchés publics du Québec (AMPQ), Christmas tree sellers set up from November 15 to December 24, and "ani-matins" (morning activities) with Santa and a choir livened up December. The market keeps its usual hours in December, but it closes December 25 and 26 and January 1 and 2. Good to know before you go
The market is served by the Lionel-Groulx metro station and by bus routes 35, 36 and 108. About 200 bike parking spaces await cyclists, but riding inside is not allowed: you can walk your bike through the aisles. By car, some 440 paid parking spaces are located on Rue Greene and behind the neighbouring Pharmaprix. As in all of Montréal's public markets, animals are not allowed, except guide dogs, under MAPAQ rules.
