In Sherbrooke, the Marché de la Gare (station market) occupies the station built in 1909 and 1910 for the Canadian Pacific, steps from Lac des Nations and downtown. The Association des marchés publics du Québec (AMPQ, the Quebec public markets association) presents it as a central place to discover what the Eastern Townships have to offer, in an atmosphere that invites you to stroll.
Why go? Because something is going on almost all year: inside, specialty shops are open every day, and outside, producers return in spring with a Friday market, followed by Saturdays in summer and fall. When mid-November comes around, the site switches to Christmas mode.
Butcher, cheese shop and producers: what you'll find
Inside, the market hosts specialty food businesses year-round: organic meat, fine cheeses, artisanal sausages and charcuterie, a wide choice of gelato and a bistro with a terrace. Among them are Boucherie du terroir, Fromagerie de la gare and the charcuterie République démocratique du jambon. These shops are open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday to Wednesday, and later on Thursday and Friday (the website says 7 p.m. or 8 p.m., depending on the page).
Outside, two covered shelters welcome market gardeners during the summer season, and the AMPQ lists about thirty stalls: fruit and vegetables, meat and poultry, fish, cheese, charcuterie, bread and pastries, honey and maple syrup, herbs and spices, herbal teas and coffees, non-timber forest products, flowers and prepared meals. The website features producers such as Les jardins Revertere, Le champignologue, Chalet des érables and Magasin général de Piopolis.
Holiday season 2026: a weekend Christmas market
The market announces its Christmas market every Saturday and Sunday from November 14 to December 20, 2026. The 2026 hours were not yet on its website in mid-October. Sortir au Québec lists 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the same hours as in 2025, when the Marché de Noël lumineux de Sherbrooke ran from November 15 to December 21, according to the AMPQ. Sortir au Québec also mentions a heated shelter, children's entertainment, shows and tastings.
The indoor shops, open year-round, are also a good place to round out your holiday menu: cheeses, charcuterie and meat for the réveillon. For inspiration, our traditional Quebec holiday recipes are waiting for you.
Good to know: a 1910 station steps from Lac des Nations
The current station was built for the Canadian Pacific, which had to handle growing transcontinental traffic. Work began in the spring or summer of 1909 and was completed in 1910, based on plans by architects Wilfrid Grégoire and Louis-Napoléon Audet. Contractors Simoneau et Dion built it for $100,000, a huge sum for the time, the market points out.
The site is linked to the Passerelle des Draveurs footbridge and the bike path: handy if you're arriving by bike. Don't miss the paving decorated with an artwork covering more than 3,500 square feet. According to the AMPQ, you'll also find a playground, a picnic area, washrooms, parking (including for bikes), a charging station and free Wi-Fi on site, and pets are allowed.
