On Rue Notre-Dame, at the corner of 18e Avenue and across from the Lachine Canal bike path, Lachine Market (Marché de Lachine) is a small neighbourhood market with a very long history. The City of Montréal describes it as Montréal's oldest public market: it was founded in 1845.
Today, it brings together a market gardener, a horticultural grower and a food business, according to the city. It's a handy stop if you're riding along the canal and want to bring home seasonal fruits, vegetables or flowers. And if you're wondering what difference it makes to shop at the market, our article on the benefits of local markets sums it up.
What you'll find at Lachine Market
From May to October, the outdoor offer is made up of market gardeners and horticultural growers: fresh fruits and vegetables, plants and flowers, depending on the season. Time Out noted in 2024 that the market is busiest in summer, when flowers hang from the roof and the stalls offer Quebec fruits and vegetables.
The main building, open year-round, houses a gourmet food shop; Tourisme Montréal mentions Nonnina there, a restaurant-bakery serving Italian specialties all year. The city also lists a café, a snack bar, a picnic area, washrooms, free Wi-Fi and a bike rack on site.
The holidays at Lachine Market
No Christmas market has been announced at Lachine Market for 2026. Its end-of-year tradition is Christmas trees: the City of Montréal says Christmas trees are sold there in December, and Tourisme Montréal mentions Christmas tree stalls in November and December. In 2024, according to Time Out, the sale ran until December 23, with proceeds going to the Maison des jeunes de Lachine, an organization that works with 12- to 17-year-olds. The 2026 dates and beneficiary have not been published.
The city's page doesn't specify the building's opening hours. Before heading over during the holidays, call 514 898-7748, the number listed by Tourisme Montréal. And for your réveillon menu, our traditional Quebec holiday recipes may inspire you.
Good to know: an eventful history
The City of Montréal, drawing on the Société d'histoire de Lachine, traces an eventful past. In December 1908, council passed a bylaw establishing a public market, with a $25,000 loan to buy the land, located between 17e and 19e avenues, and to build the necessary buildings. Architect Dalbé Viau, who also designed Saints-Anges-Gardiens church and was mayor of Lachine from 1925 to 1933, designed the two-storey building, completed in 1909. A fire destroyed it on Tuesday, October 8, 1929; the extent of the damage forced council to demolish it and install a roof to shelter farmers on bad-weather days.
In the late 1950s, a plan to move the market was dropped in the face of opposition from residents, and the market then declined from the 1960s on. In the spring of 2004, the borough undertook major renovations so that the indoor part could be open year-round. On the practical side, on-site parking is free, according to the city and Tourisme Montréal.
