At the corner of Avenue Henri-Julien and Rue Jean-Talon, in the heart of Little Italy, Jean-Talon Market has been feeding Montrealers since 1933. The Société des Marchés publics de Montréal, which runs it, describes it as one of the largest open-air public markets in North America: at the height of summer, it has nearly 200 vendors.
And it doesn't close in winter. In October, the market moves indoors, and its outdoor aisles come back to life around late April. So you can do your market shopping there twelve months a year. If you're wondering why you should shop at the market rather than the grocery store, our article on the benefits of local markets covers the question.
What you'll find at Jean-Talon Market
The heart of the market is its market gardeners and horticultural growers. Around them you'll find butchers and delis, fishmongers, cheese shops, bakeries and pastry shops, grocery and bulk stores, egg sellers, florists and restaurants. The listing of the Association des marchés publics du Québec (AMPQ) also mentions jams and pickles, honey and maple syrup, prepared meals, non-timber forest products, teas and coffees, and alcoholic beverages.
Among the businesses in the market's directory, you'll come across Première Moisson, the Aqua Mare fish shop and Havre-aux-glaces, for example. Tourisme Montréal also notes an SAQ store on site. From May to October, the Kiosques de la Relève, rented by the day, give young farmers and food processors a showcase, with financial support from the Union des producteurs agricoles.
The holidays at Jean-Talon Market: what we know for 2026
As of October 15, 2026, the 2026 holiday program has not been published yet: the events page of the Société des Marchés publics de Montréal lists nothing after October. The market itself stays open in December on its usual schedule, except December 25 and 26 and January 1 and 2, the closing days listed in the Société's FAQ.
To give you an idea, the 2025 edition ran over three weekends: December 5 to 7, December 12 to 14, then December 20 and 21. About ten exhibitors selling gourmet products and tableware set up each day in the northeast section of the market and on the mezzanine, with free workshops, Christmas storytelling, a visit from Santa and a winter terrace open until 8 p.m. on Fridays. There's no guarantee the formula will return as is: keep an eye on the market's website as December approaches. To plan your réveillon, also take a look at our traditional Quebec holiday recipes.
Good to know: history and access
The market was inaugurated in May 1933 under the name "Marché du Nord". According to Tourisme Montréal, the city bought the land, a former lacrosse field, after the 1929 crash to build a market and create jobs. It was renamed Marché Jean-Talon in 1983, in honour of the first intendant of New France.
To get there, the market is served by the Jean-Talon and De Castelnau metro stations, and bus routes 51, 55, 92 and 93 serve the area. It has about 150 bike parking spaces and nearly 400 paid parking spaces, including an indoor lot. From June to October, the aisles are closed to cars Thursday to Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. According to the AMPQ listing, Kéroul recognizes the market as accessible to people with reduced mobility. As in all of Montréal's public markets, animals are not allowed, except guide dogs.
