Le 1555 Marché public in Saint-Hyacinthe: a market open since 1830

In downtown Saint-Hyacinthe, the 1555 Marché public is open every day, year-round, on a market site that dates back to 1830. From November 27 to December 20, 2026, it also hosts the Saint-Hyacinthe Christmas Market, four weekends in a row.

In downtown Saint-Hyacinthe, on Rue des Cascades, the 1555 Marché public carries on a story that began in 1830, when the seigneur Jean Dessaulles had a modest wooden market hall built on land given to the municipality. The market presents itself as the oldest public market in Quebec to have kept its agri-food vocation, and the Association des marchés publics du Québec (AMPQ, the Quebec public markets association) calls it the "dean of markets in Quebec".

Its big advantage: it's open every day, year-round, so you can do part of your grocery shopping with specialized merchants, right in the heart of town. The market says it aims to showcase regional products and to share good practices in the agri-food world. Our article on the benefits of local markets explains what this kind of shopping really changes.

Cheese shop, fishmonger, bakery: who does business at the 1555

Inside, seven merchants share the hall: a cheese shop, a fruit and vegetable stand, a sausage maker, a charcuterie, a fishmonger, a bakery and a pastry shop. The merchants page on the official website names À la vieille fromagerie, Boucherie Georges, Poissonnerie Granada, Boulangerie Délices Granada, Pâtisserie La Demi-Calorie, Les Jardins du Vieux Marché and William J. Walter. Seasonal producers also set up outside.

On its listing, the AMPQ counts 7 to 17 stalls and lists what you'll regularly find: fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and poultry, fish and seafood, cheese, charcuterie, jams and pickles, prepared meals, bread and pastries, flowers and plants, and products with flavours from elsewhere. The building shelters customers and vendors from the weather.

Holiday season 2026: the Saint-Hyacinthe Christmas Market

The 1555 Marché public is once again hosting the Marché de Noël de Saint-Hyacinthe, organized by the SDC centre-ville Saint-Hyacinthe. New in 2026: a fourth weekend has been added at the end of November. The market runs November 27 to 29, December 4 to 6, December 11 to 13 and December 18 to 20, 2026, on Fridays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. In 2025, the event held its 6th edition, from December 5 to 21.

Close to 80 exhibitors are announced, from downtown, the MRC des Maskoutains and elsewhere in Quebec: cideries, vineyards and distilleries, cheese makers, chocolatiers, producers of honey, maple products or saffron, as well as soap makers, jewellery and stationery. The program includes, among other things, a letters-to-Santa drop-off on Saturday, November 28, visits from Santa and a Christmas dog day on December 12 and 19, folk dancing and a cappella singing. A small downtown hut serves hot chocolate, coffee and mulled wine.

On the practical side, all exhibitors accept cash, but only some take cards. An ATM is a few steps away. Leashed dogs are welcome, and the event goes ahead rain or shine, unless conditions become dangerous. Good to know: a historic monument downtown

A fire ravaged the market on September 3, 1876, and the building was rebuilt the following year, with the look it still has today. On December 19, 2011, the City of Saint-Hyacinthe designated it a historic monument because of its age and architectural value. The AMPQ also describes it as a jewel of Saint-Hyacinthe architecture.

According to the AMPQ, you'll find washrooms, a seating area, parking, bike racks and free Wi-Fi on site, and most stalls accept Interac and credit cards. Public transit runs nearby.
