In Trois-Rivières, January averages -9.9 °C and the year adds up to 4,498 heating degree-days (1991–2020 normals), barely 5% more than Montreal. That's still colder than the -8 °C LogisVert uses in its calculation, and the station recorded -32.3 °C on January 16, 2009. Farther north in Mauricie, have the system sized for your area.
Even in the south of the region, an ENERGY STAR Cold Climate model is worth it. Hydro-Québec notes that it performs better in very cold weather, and LogisVert rewards it: $120 per 1,000 BTU/h at -8 °C, versus $50 for a unit that is only ENERGY STAR certified. On 24,000 BTU/h, the difference is $1,680. Below its minimum operating temperature, between -15 °C and -25 °C for newer models, the heat pump leaves all the heating to your backup system, so don't get rid of it.
Hydro-Québec serves the entire region. In Opitciwan, the LogisVert guide sets special conditions, so check before you buy. The free heat pump for modest-income households is being rolled out in Mauricie, but 2026–2027 registration is closed. Chauffez vert ended on March 31, 2026, and Rénoclimat no longer funds heating. As for the $2,000 federal rebate announced on October 8, 2026, its portal is promised for January: don't sign anything that depends on it.
Before hiring anyone, look up their licence number in the RBQ register: it must include 15.9 or 15.10, in addition to 15.1, 15.7 or 15.8, and the company must belong to the corporation for its trade, such as the CMMTQ or CETAF.
