In Angers, a sector of Gatineau, January averages -11.2 °C and the year adds up to 4,827 heating degree-days, about 13% more than Montreal (1991–2020 normals). On January 19, 1994, the station recorded -39 °C. An ENERGY STAR Cold Climate heat pump backed by your existing heating is the starting point: according to Hydro-Québec, newer models stop working somewhere between -15 °C and -25 °C, and the backup then does all the work.
If you still heat with oil in Gatineau, the city reimburses 75% of the cost of the work, up to $3,500 per building, to switch to a system powered only by electricity, with the tank removed. The program covers residential buildings with 20 units or fewer in the Aylmer, Hull, Gatineau, Buckingham and Masson-Angers sectors, and applications are being accepted again until the funds run out. Careful: the work must not have received funding from another program covering the same work. Ask the city to confirm whether LogisVert is compatible.
LogisVert pays $120 per 1,000 BTU/h at -8 °C for a Cold Climate model and $50 for an ENERGY STAR model, with the application due within nine months of installation. Chauffez vert ended on March 31, 2026, Rénoclimat no longer funds heating, and 2026–2027 registration for the free heat pump is closed. The $2,000 federal rebate announced on October 8, 2026, isn't open yet.
