Gatineau is among the best places in Quebec for solar. Natural Resources Canada's data give it 1,200 kWh a year for one kilowatt of panels facing due south and tilted at the latitude angle, exactly the average Hydro-Québec quotes for Quebec. Shawville (1,201 kWh) and Maniwaki (1,191 kWh) are close behind. For a 5 kW system in Gatineau: 5 × 1,200 = 6,000 kWh a year.
The whole region is served by Hydro-Québec, with no municipal utility, so you have access to net metering: electricity you don't use becomes a kWh credit on your next bills. Since the bank resets every 24 months, with the balance credited at 4.730¢ per kWh, aim for your actual consumption.
A regional quirk: Ottawa is right next door. An Ontario installer may seem convenient, but to qualify for LogisVert, the business must be registered with Quebec's Registraire des entreprises and hold the appropriate RBQ licences. The panels must also be new and bought from a business with a Quebec address. And the connection request to Hydro-Québec must be filed by a master electrician before you buy. Hydro-Québec also recommends NABCEP certification.
With LogisVert, a 5 kW system installed since June 30, 2025 brings in $5,000 ($1,000 per kW), provided the project costs at least $12,500, since the grant can't exceed 40% of the cost. The Outaouais was among the regions hit hardest by the 2022 derecho and the 2022 holiday storm. For backup power during outages, Hydro-Québec mentions batteries, which LogisVert doesn't cover; Rénoclimat offers up to $4,000 for a fixed battery installed after October 1, 2026, in a principal residence.
