Montérégie was at the heart of the 1998 ice storm: the “black triangle” formed by Saint-Hyacinthe, Granby and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu got more than 100 mm of ice, and on January 14 there were still some 350,000 outages in Montérégie. Since then, the region has appeared in most Hydro-Québec outage reports: about 190,000 customers out on April 6, 2023 after the ice storm, and about 73,000 still without power on November 11, 2025 at 5 p.m., the highest regional count that day.
Most homes are Hydro-Québec customers, and Hydro-Québec offers Rate Flex D: 46.463¢/kWh during winter peak demand events, which your battery can cover. The Coopérative régionale d'électricité de Saint-Jean-Baptiste-de-Rouville also distributes power in 14 municipalities in the region, including Marieville, Rougemont and Saint-Jean-Baptiste: check who sends your bill. The co-op does not offer Flex D, but it does offer net metering and lists batteries among self-generation installations. Its official authorization is mandatory before any connection, and it charges no fees for the vast majority of projects.
Rénoclimat pays up to $4,000 since October 1, 2026 for a fixed battery of at least 5 kWh in a principal residence, with a true sine wave inverter (1.2 kW continuous, 2.5 kW surge), grid-connected and compliant with Hydro-Québec standard E.12-07. Watch out for stacking: the program forbids combining it with any other public assistance, municipal aid included. Varennes, for example, tops up Rénoclimat grants by 25%: check before counting on it for a battery. LogisVert excludes storage.
