In Laval, the April 5, 2023 ice storm showed that outages can drag on in the city too. Five days later, on April 10 at 9 a.m., about 3,000 Laval customers were still without power. At the storm's peak, about 1,125,000 Hydro-Québec customers were affected at the same time across Quebec.
The whole island is served by Hydro-Québec, and Rate Flex D is available. A well-used battery therefore does two jobs: it keeps essential circuits running during an outage, and it powers the house during winter peak demand events, when electricity costs 46.463¢/kWh instead of 9.103¢. If you have solar panels on net metering, forget Flex D: the two are incompatible. Net metering already credits your surplus in kilowatt-hours, so your battery would then mainly serve during outages.
Rénoclimat pays up to $4,000 for a fixed battery installed since October 1, 2026 in a principal residence, a duplex, a triplex or a multi-unit residential building. The system must store at least 5 kWh, be permanently connected to the panel and use a true sine wave inverter (1.2 kW continuous, 2.5 kW surge), grid-connected and compliant with Hydro-Québec standard E.12-07. In a condo, the syndicate of co-owners receives the grant. No other public assistance can be combined for the same work, and LogisVert excludes storage.
One last tip: don't let anyone order equipment before Hydro-Québec's conditional approval. Hydro-Québec checks how much capacity your area's grid has left, and if many self-generation systems are already connected there, the request can be put on hold. For heat pumps, the licence must also include a refrigeration subclass (15.9 or 15.10). When a subclass that Hydro-Québec requires for LogisVert is missing (15.1, 15.7 or 15.8 for a heat pump; 11.2 or 13.5, and 16, for solar panels), the listing says so.
