Get quotes Calculate my payback

Solar panels on a Quebec home come down to numbers. Hydro-Québec estimates that one installed kilowatt produces an average of 1,200 kWh a year in Quebec, or about 6,000 kWh for a 5 kW system. Natural Resources Canada data, for panels facing due south and tilted at the latitude angle, range from 1,033 kWh per kW in Kuujjuaq to 1,200 kWh in Gatineau. Each regional page redoes the math for its own towns.

Financial help. Hydro-Québec's LogisVert program pays $1,000 per installed kW, up to 40% of purchase and installation costs, for panels installed since June 30, 2025 on a house, a multiplex or a building with 19 units or fewer (not condos). With this grant, Hydro-Québec is aiming for a payback period of 10 to 12 years by 2035, compared with 25 to 30 years. On the Magdalen Islands, specific terms provide $2,000 per kW, up to 50% of costs. Batteries aren't covered by LogisVert; Rénoclimat offers up to $4,000 for a fixed battery installed after October 1, 2026 in a principal residence.

Net metering. With Hydro-Québec, electricity you don't use becomes a kWh credit on your next bills. The credit bank is reset every 24 months, and the balance is then credited at the average cost of supply, 4.730¢ per kWh, so there's no point aiming beyond your consumption. The ten municipal and co-op utilities have their own rules. Only Hydro-Jonquière and the Coopérative de Saint-Jean-Baptiste offer net metering, capped at 50 kW. Hydro-Sherbrooke, Hydro-Magog, Hydro-Coaticook, Hydro-Joliette and the Alma, Amos and Baie-Comeau utilities don't, and Hydro Westmount doesn't allow power to be fed into its grid. With a municipal utility, LogisVert also requires that utility's written authorization.

Choosing an installer. Check the company's RBQ licence. A master electrician, who must be a CMEQ member, files the connection request: wait for Hydro-Québec's conditional acceptance before buying equipment. Hydro-Québec strongly recommends experience with grid-connected solar, ideally NABCEP certification. Pick your region to see its installers and what's specific there. The rules change most in the Eastern Townships, Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, Montreal (Westmount), Montérégie, Lanaudière (Joliette), Abitibi-Témiscamingue (Amos), the Côte-Nord (Baie-Comeau) and the Magdalen Islands.

How we built this list

We looked for companies that advertise this service on their own website, then kept only those whose licence is active in the Régie du bâtiment du Québec open data. For heat pumps, the licence must also include a refrigeration subclass (15.9 or 15.10). When a subclass that Hydro-Québec requires for LogisVert is missing (15.1, 15.7 or 15.8 for a heat pump; 11.2 or 13.5, and 16, for solar panels), the listing says so. The service area is the one the company advertises. Nobody paid to be listed here, and no company has been rated: check the licence, insurance and references yourself before you sign. Check a contractor before you sign: RBQ licence, CMMTQ and CMEQ
