Solar panels in Chibougamau may sound far-fetched. Yet Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) estimates that one kilowatt facing due south and tilted at the latitude angle produces 1,138 kWh a year there, almost as much as in Québec City (1,137 kWh). Chisasibi comes in at 1,123 kWh and Kuujjuaq at 1,033 kWh. For a 5 kW system in Chibougamau: 5 × 1,138 = about 5,690 kWh a year.
What changes is how output is spread over the year. The farther north you go, the heavier winter weighs: in Kuujjuaq, NRCan projects 41 kWh per kW in December versus 102 in July. Snow can also reduce output, but Hydro-Québec considers snow clearing unnecessary in most cases with good tilt and panels raised about 45 cm (18 in.).
There's no municipal utility in the region: your utility is Hydro-Québec. Its net metering turns your surplus into kWh credits you can use in winter; the bank resets every two years, with a credit of 4.730¢ for each remaining kWh. In Nunavik, the LogisVert guide sets out special conditions for some measures, and in a region served by an autonomous grid, panels added to fuel-based heating aren't eligible: check with Hydro-Québec before ordering.
Otherwise, the general rule applies: $1,000 from LogisVert per kW installed since June 30, 2025, up to 40% of the cost. Distances are long, so plan early and confirm that a master electrician who is a CMEQ member will file the connection request with Hydro-Québec before you buy. Check the RBQ licence, ask for CSA-certified panels (required by LogisVert) and, ideally, a NABCEP-certified installer, as Hydro-Québec recommends.
