In Montreal, one kilowatt of panels facing due south and tilted at the latitude angle produces 1,190 kWh a year, according to Natural Resources Canada. For a 5 kW system: 5 × 1,190 = about 5,950 kWh. Tilt matters, especially on a flat roof: panels laid flat produce only 969 kWh per kW, or about 4,845 kWh for 5 kW, 19% less.
What it's worth: under Hydro-Québec's Rate D, in effect since April 1, 2026, each kWh you produce replaces a kWh you would have paid 7.065¢ or 11.142¢, depending on the tier. Those 5,950 kWh are therefore worth $420 to $663 a year before taxes, if you use all your net metering credits. Watch out for accumulated surplus: every 24 months, the bank resets and the balance is worth only 4.730¢ per kWh.
One important exception: Westmount. Hydro Westmount, not Hydro-Québec, serves the entire city, and its By-law 1619 is clear: connecting generating equipment to feed electricity into its grid is not permitted. No injection means no net metering. Since LogisVert requires the municipal utility's written authorization to connect panels, talk to Hydro Westmount before you shop. Solar panel permits there are issued by the city's permits and inspections division.
Elsewhere on the island, the LogisVert grant reaches $1,000 per kW, up to 40% of the purchase and installation price, for panels installed since June 30, 2025. A plex qualifies; a condo doesn't. Insist on an RBQ licence, a master electrician who is a CMEQ member and files the connection request with Hydro-Québec before you buy, and ideally NABCEP certification.
